HONORING INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL

Every girl has a voice. Every girl has ideas, dreams, and the right to make decisions about her own life.

Yet, too often, girls grow up in environments where their voices are questioned, their choices are restricted, and their futures are shaped by expectations they did not choose.

The problem has never been a lack of potential in girls. It is the barriers that stand in their way.

As we reflect on International Day of the Girl, we are reminded that celebrating girls is not enough. We must also question the inequalities, beliefs, and systems that continue to limit their autonomy, safety, and opportunities.

Girls do not need someone else to give them a voice. Their voices already matter.

What they need are environments where they can express themselves without fear, access information about their rights and bodies, question harmful gender norms, and make informed decisions about their lives.

This understanding is central to the work of Asociación SERniña, our partner organization in Guatemala.

Through feminist, participatory, and community-based education, SERniña accompanies girls and adolescents on journeys of self-discovery, reflection, and personal empowerment.

Rather than telling girls who they should become, this work creates opportunities for them to recognize who they already are: individuals with inherent worth, autonomy, and the capacity to shape their own lives.

For generations, girls and women have been expected to adapt to systems that were not designed with their rights, safety, or autonomy in mind.

They are encouraged to be confident while facing discrimination. They are told to speak up while their voices are dismissed. They are encouraged to dream big while structural inequalities continue to restrict their choices.

Real empowerment cannot depend solely on changing girls. We must also change the conditions around them.

This is why REALgirl's approach extends beyond individual empowerment.

Through SERniña's programs in Guatemala, we work with girls, boys, adolescents, families, educators, and communities to challenge harmful gender norms and promote healthier, more equitable relationships.

Working with boys is an essential part of this commitment. Questioning traditional ideas of masculinity, creating space for emotional expression, and encouraging empathy and compassion are important steps toward challenging the beliefs and behaviors that perpetuate gender inequality.

Advancing girls' rights is not the responsibility of girls alone. It is a collective responsibility.

Through playful and participatory methodologies, children and adolescents are encouraged to explore their identities, reflect on their relationships, and question the expectations placed upon them.

This work recognizes that meaningful change is interconnected.

A girl's well-being cannot be separated from the environment in which she grows up. Families, schools, and communities all have a role in creating conditions where girls and women can live with greater safety, autonomy, and dignity.

While transformation takes time, creating spaces for reflection, healing, and learning is an important part of building more equitable communities.

International Day of the Girl is an opportunity to recognize girls' voices, strength, and contributions.

But recognition must be accompanied by action.

It means listening to girls and taking their experiences seriously. It means challenging violence and discrimination rather than expecting girls to navigate these challenges alone. It means supporting education that encourages critical thinking, bodily autonomy, and informed decision-making.

And it means investing in community-led initiatives that address the root causes of gender inequality.

At REALgirl Foundation, we remain committed to this work alongside Asociación SERniña and the communities we partner with in Guatemala.

To everyone who stands alongside us, including our donors and supporters: thank you for being part of this collective commitment.

Your support helps sustain the spaces, relationships, and educational programs that make this work possible.

Because the goal is not simply to prepare girls for a different future.

It is to help build a world where their rights, autonomy, and dignity are respected today.
